Thrift Stores
When I lived in new york, thrift stores were where we dumped our old crap and got tax reductions. they were those places that you would see older people going into, hoping that they could find something that wouldn’t break their retirement fund or something that would take them back to their younger years. they were stores that some people, like Jenny Humphrey - a girl from Brooklyn with not much money in the series “Gossip Girl” - would buy stuff and then make off as if it were from Bendels or Bergdorf’s. Because, lets face it, if you showed up in school like that and actually admitted that it was from some bin at a thrift store and second hand you were looked down upon with the same disdain as the hobos sitting on the nearby streets of your 5th ave penthouse.
However, times have changed - at least for me. Now, what was looked down upon is actually affordable and practical. I recently hit up a few consignment stores and thrift shops, and found some really nice stuff, some diamonds in the rut, if you may. I found a j crew grey denim jacket that was probably $100+ and i got it for about $10. Now, if you ask me, i’d say that’s a pretty good find. At a thrift store yesterday, i also found a pair of american eagle jeans for $2.50 and a shirt from buffalo for $4.99.
I have to say, i think location really does change someone’s opinions. 4 years ago, you couldn’t pay me to go into a second hand store, but today, its an adventure every time.
